The Denim Jungle Storytime – From Us to You!

19 Jan

storytime, reading, book,Angela,SzabaHello, friends. How were your holidays? I hope 2017 is treating you well. A new year brings new challenges, but it also brings new hope.

Last year was quite a whirlwind for me, with the release of my first book, The Denim Jungle. But one of my favorite parts was all the story times I got to do at libraries, classrooms, and book stores.

So I thought: Why not give my readers, far and wide, their very own story time? And who better to help me than my daughter, Szaba? By now, she knows The Denim Jungle front to back.

Here’s our video, which includes explanations about the details and even some secrets hidden inside… along with Szaba’s own special blend of silliness, of course.

We hope you enjoy it! Continue reading

Creative Generosity

28 Oct poem,poetry,szaba,green lake

poem, poetry, szaba, green lakeThe world could do with a little more creative generosity, don’t you think?

What do I mean by creative generosity? Giving of your imagination and creative talents for no other reason than to be happy and help make other people happy

There’s a writer who frequents our local park, gifting poems to people as writing practice for herself and her own special contribution to the community. She wrote one for my daughter the other day, and it was so on point, I teared up a bit.

I wanted to share it with all of you, as well as its message:

Don’t let anyone hold you back… and that includes yourself.

And, who knows? Maybe this will inspire your own bout of creative generosity. My daughter is already planning a front yard lemonade-type stand… but free, with her homemade stories and art as the treats.

Wishing you all a creative, generous day.

Happy Dance Time

12 Apr

Who wants to join me in a happy dance? I just discovered The Denim Jungle has its first blog review.

At which point I pretty much did this…

From Loralee Leavitt of CandyExperiements.com:

“A new picture book invites parents everywhere to get down to kid level and look at the world their children see. In The Denim Jungle, a child explores a forest of blue-jeaned grown-up legs, as ordinary objects magically become exciting.

Angela Taylor Hylland’s easy verse feels like natural conversation, quite an accomplishment for a debut author.

“This fun little book reminded me how important Continue reading

WHAT A WEEK!!

6 Nov

See that little bar? That’s my book flying off to Print-ville!

What a week, you guys! I seriously can’t even believe everything that’s happened in the past five days.

  • Sunday: Received all final art assets for The Denim Jungle.
  • Monday: Learned InDesign to layout the book for printing.
  • Tuesday: Finalized the layout files with an old design friend.
  • Wednesday: Received proofreader approval.
  • Thursday: Uploaded the files and distribution info on the printer’s site and in the ISBN database.

I feel like I’ve been on fast forward! And somehow I even took care of two kids and squeezed in a little client work on top of all that.

Today I’m ordering the proof, and (assuming all’s well) The Denim Jungle could be in my hands and available for sale as early as next week!

Regardless, I’ll definitely be sharing some art with you very soon. Jackie has gone above and beyond with the illustrations. I think you’ll be blown by her style.

It seems funny that a book five years in the making could go from idea to actuality in basically six days. But that’s how dreams work. They have fits and starts, but boy, when the universe sees your serious, does it put wind in your sails.

Keep working toward those dreams, friends. And soon I’ll have LOTS of from-the-trenches tips for all my fellow would-be children’s authors.

A Song in Your Sails

24 Aug

Seattle Lake Union Song

Here’s to starting the week with something beautiful.

Here’s to being inspired and having the guts to do the inspiring.

Here’s to being our best selves—flawed, ever-evolving, and committed to following the path that’s calling, even if it’s not the easy one.

May this song put wind in your sails and resolution in your heart. Continue reading
