The Denim Jungle Storytime – From Us to You!

19 Jan

storytime, reading, book,Angela,SzabaHello, friends. How were your holidays? I hope 2017 is treating you well. A new year brings new challenges, but it also brings new hope.

Last year was quite a whirlwind for me, with the release of my first book, The Denim Jungle. But one of my favorite parts was all the story times I got to do at libraries, classrooms, and book stores.

So I thought: Why not give my readers, far and wide, their very own story time? And who better to help me than my daughter, Szaba? By now, she knows The Denim Jungle front to back.

Here’s our video, which includes explanations about the details and even some secrets hidden inside… along with Szaba’s own special blend of silliness, of course.

We hope you enjoy it! Continue reading

WOW! Writer’s Digest Review of The Denim Jungle

Writers Digest Self Published Book Awards

I am absolutely floored by this review of The Denim Jungle I just received from the 24th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Books Awards.

And it couldn’t come at a better time. Last week was the one-year anniversary of finally having my book (MY book!) in my hands, and tomorrow is the sixth anniversary of losing Sue, who inspired me to make it. To say it’s a bittersweet time of year would be a profound understatement.

I miss you, Sue. Thank you for being you. Thank you for motivating me (and so many others) to imagine and commit and create. Thank you for giving me this connection to you. But most of all, thank you for helping me be the kind of mom who can show her kids that dreams can be made reality with hard work and heart.

Book PublishingThey say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but in fact we all do.

Take for example the books above, all of which come up when you search Amazon for “cover design.”

One topic. Five very different covers. And five rather different judgements we automatically assign to each.

Self-publishing friends, those judgements transform into sales.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, folks. Here are three easy tips to make your book’s first impression a lasting one… in a good way.

WHAT A WEEK!!

6 Nov

See that little bar? That’s my book flying off to Print-ville!

What a week, you guys! I seriously can’t even believe everything that’s happened in the past five days.

  • Sunday: Received all final art assets for The Denim Jungle.
  • Monday: Learned InDesign to layout the book for printing.
  • Tuesday: Finalized the layout files with an old design friend.
  • Wednesday: Received proofreader approval.
  • Thursday: Uploaded the files and distribution info on the printer’s site and in the ISBN database.

I feel like I’ve been on fast forward! And somehow I even took care of two kids and squeezed in a little client work on top of all that.

Today I’m ordering the proof, and (assuming all’s well) The Denim Jungle could be in my hands and available for sale as early as next week!

Regardless, I’ll definitely be sharing some art with you very soon. Jackie has gone above and beyond with the illustrations. I think you’ll be blown by her style.

It seems funny that a book five years in the making could go from idea to actuality in basically six days. But that’s how dreams work. They have fits and starts, but boy, when the universe sees your serious, does it put wind in your sails.

Keep working toward those dreams, friends. And soon I’ll have LOTS of from-the-trenches tips for all my fellow would-be children’s authors.
