DIY Dollhouse

8 Jul

DIY DollhouseParents with young kids know: There will be stir-crazy days. And on those days, your child’s least favorite thing to play with will be all of their toys.

That’s exactly what led to this DIY dollhouse.

So, if your kid is clamoring for a dollhouse, but you don’t want to spend a lot of dough on something they’ll destroy or lose interest in next week, this idea is for you!

Already have a dollhouse? Perhaps you could use it for your dolls’ in-laws or extra rental income from your LEGO people…

Free Seattle: Bayview-Kinnear Park

31 Jul

Bored at home? Try out a new park.

Bring a picnic lunch. Better yet, take a friend’s kid, so she can go get a  pedicure (and swap the favor next week).

We recently tried Bayview-Kinnear Park (below Kerry Park) on Queen Anne hill in Seattle. The play gear was completely different from anything Szaba (or I) had seen before, and we had a ton of fun exploring. Plus, there are fantastic views and arguably one of the city’s best slides.

If you’re visiting Seattle, it’s just a short jaunt north of downtown. Hop a cab or a bus, and you’ll be there in about 10 minutes.

Have exploring!

Grocery Adventure

17 Jul

I had a bored toddler, a rainy day, and an empty fridge. To the grocery store!

5 Ideas:

1. Let your toddler bring along a fellow adventurer: a favorite toy or stuffed animal.

2. Make it a game: Can you find something brown? Do you see an apple? Let’s look for something cold …

3. Point out and feel different textures. Szaba particularly liked the asparagus and kiwi.

4. Let your child pick something new to try. I was amazed by all the kid-themed items at her eye level that I’d never even noticed before.

5. Grab a store flyer and use the food pictures to create an “art” piece when you get home, commemorating your adventure.

How do you make the grocery store (or other errand spots) fun for your kids?

Dish Duty

In the constant need for something to amuse my 2 year old, I’ve considered everything but the kitchen sink.

Wait, why NOT the kitchen sink?

Car Wash

29 May

toddler activity carwash choreThat’s right, parents. You, too, can subject your toddler to child labor. Best of all, they LOVE it!

Szaba is a big fan of washing the car in particular. Come on, what toddler doesn’t like:

(a) being outside,

(b) hanging out with Dad, and

(c) playing in sudsy water with sponges?
